  • Before you buy an e-device, consider if your child experienced enough. YOU CAN BE TICKETED (opens in new window/tab)

California electric rideables have strict rules based on vehicle type:

    • E-Scooters: Require a driver’s license or permit (min. age 15½), max out at 15 MPH, and must be ridden in bike lanes—never on sidewalks or with passengers.

    • E-Bicycles: Class 1 and 2 (up to 20 MPH) have no age limit, while Class 3 (up to 28 MPH) requires riders to be at least 16 and stays off bike paths.

    • E-Motorcycles: Any e-device exceeding 30 MPH is strictly prohibited on public roads, sidewalks, and bike paths, and is limited to private property or DMV-registered OHV parks.

    • General Rules: Helmets are mandatory for riders under 18 (and all e-motorcycle riders regardless of age), traffic laws apply to all devices, and offenders can be ticketed.
